Primary Art - In Primary Art students become aware that all of their talents are a gift from God, and by using these talents is a way of praising God. They learn to use the Art room and its equipment and supplies in a safe manner. They are introduced to the Elements of Art in a simple context to start the building process. This is done through the use of many different mediums. Artwork is often displayed to instill an appreciation for their own work and the work of others. The work of Artist is studied to give value to the history of Art.
Intermediate Art - Intermediate art classes continue to build on the elements and principles of design. Students are challenged to build on their creativity by improving in the areas of craftsmanship and using mixed mediums. Hand building is introduced in Ceramics. Student artwork is displayed so that the talent of our students may be appreciated. Artist both past and present are studied by all grade levels.
Middle School Art - Students in middle school art class continue to build their skills while incorporating the elements and principles of design in their work. Craftsmanship is improved upon and multiple mediums are used. Students work is exhibited and sometimes sold. Artist both past and present are studied.
Our music classes are based on the philosophy set forth by the Kodály Method, an approach to music education developed by the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodály. These practices recognize the many ways in which children learn: aurally, visually, and kinesthetically. The Kodály Methodology thus empowers students with the ability to read music.
Students learn the various sounds (rhythmic and pitch) through folk songs of their culture first, and then expand to folk songs of other cultures before learning and attaching the music symbol (notation) to the sound. Just as one learns to speak before they read, the same process is applied in learning to read music. The ability to hear music without the aid of an instrument is paramount. The voice is the child’s first instrument and needs to be developed as such. From this natural progression of child-centered learning, students continue their learning to more advanced steps including transcribing (dictating) and writing their own music.
Here at Christ the King School, we understand the importance of introducing your child to music at an early age, so students begin their music education in pre-school. They explore the world around them through music and learn early childhood developmental concepts through play. As students continue their educational path, they embark upon expressing themselves through a wide array of musical activities to ensure a holistic music education, as set forth by the National Standards for Music Education.

Elementary Spanish - Spanish skills will increase each year as students build from previously taught skills. An array of teaching strategies is used to reach different types of learning styles. Students will begin taking Spanish classes in preschool. By the end of the kindergarten year, students will feel comfortable following one to two word directions and commands in Spanish. During first and second grades, students will learn how to read in Spanish. Pronunciation will be native like as students hear it from a native speaker. In third grade, students will be able to have small conversations and make requests. Introduction to verbs will begin. In fourth grade, Spanish conjugations will begin. Students will begin making sentences with correct pronoun to verb correspondence. By fifth grade, students will feel comfortable using irregular verbs. Self editing in writing begins to appear. By fifth grade, students are completely immersed in a Spanish classroom and all directions and lessons are only spoken in Spanish.
Middle School Spanish - The goal of the middle school Spanish program at CKS is to prepare students to enter Spanish II at the high school level. The Spanish I content is broken down into a three year program. Sixth grade students will learn vocabulary to describe themselves and others as well as basic verb structure. Seventh grade students will study more advanced grammatical structure (“to be”, articles, etc.), expand on their vocabulary knowledge, and learn more about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Finally, 8th grade students will study the present and past tense of all verbs (regular and irregular), enhance speaking skills and discuss their lives and the lives of others in both past and present tense with correct vocabulary.
Kindergarten & 1st Grade - Students begin their year with new passwords. We begin making sure that we all can logon to the network, open and use a program, manipulate a mouse, and logoff the network. This year is spent in a review of the fundamentals of the graphics program, MS Paint, and an introduction to MS Word Processing. We will become familiar with a few computer terms and the keyboard.
2nd Grade - Second grade students will begin the year with a review of Microsoft Paint. We will continue working with Microsoft Word entering and editing text, and we will study technology terms. When students are ready, they will be taking quizzes in Accelerated Reader at the beginning of each class period.
3rd Grade - Third grade students will begin keyboarding. We will learn the home row of keys and progress steadily through all the letters of the alphabet. Microsoft Word will be an important part of the curriculum as we work on formatting and projects such as letter writing. File management becomes a valuable tool so that saved files can be easily found for editing and printing. Web research will be explored and students will have the opportunity to take Accelerated Reader quizzes at the beginning of each class period.
4th Grade - This first trimester we will concentrate on keyboarding skills. Students will begin by learning proper posture and location of the home row of keys. They will progress through lessons at their own pace. These lessons will teach all the letters of the alphabet and punctuation. I encourage students to use these techniques whenever they are using a computer at home or at school. We will also spend a great deal of time fine tuning our Microsoft Word formatting skills and begin learning the basics of Microsoft PowerPoint and a brief introduction of Microsoft Excel.
5th Grade - This year we will work on our keyboarding skills. Last year we began with proper posture and the home row of keys. We will continue to use keyboarding software as we progress through lessons that will teach all the letters of the alphabet and punctuation. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint will also be our focus during this school year. Digital photography will accompany projects as well.
6th Grade - Learning keyboarding requires a great deal of practice and drill. Students will learn proper keyboarding techniques by combining a demonstration of the reach for each new key with actual typing. If errors are made by the student the correct technique is demonstrated. Each lesson will introduce an average of 2 new keys and will practice these keystrokes as well those from prior lessons. There is a words per minute and accuracy test at the end of each lesson.
8th Grade Broadcast News - Broadcast News is a project-based class where eighth grade students gain experience in journalism, film/audio editing, public speaking, script writing/editing, equipment operation and project management skills. When projects are completed, they are broadcast to the entire school via Smartboards.
The physical education curriculum for grades Prek-Eighth focuses on age appropriate activities that meet the National and State Standards of Physical Education Instruction, meet the NASPE content standards, and follow Christ the King’s FAITH guidelines.
The band program at Christ the King has been very active this year in performances and practices. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands have all been working on a variety of music for the Halloween, Christmas, Area, and Spring Concerts. We have added thiry-nine 5th graders to the program this year almost doubling its size. Each grade works on its own during class but they all come together to perform as an ensemble.
We are a performance group that insists on quality and commitment. Chorusperforms for school assemblies, annual concerts (Winter & Spring), and participates in festival and select choirs through the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Solo opportunities are also made available through Solo & Ensemble Festival.
Chorus is a one year commitment that expands upon elementary music reading skills, and introduces music theory, vocal development/technique, and performance etiquette. Students enjoy being part of something larger: a community of great musicians and friends.
The goal of this 12-week course is to engage students in the research process including choosing appropriate topics, using research materials and citing sources in commonly accepted formats. This class is designed to help you learn successful research techniques and how to use computers, the Internet and web based materials correctly in completing research projects that tie into other core content classes (Social Studies, Science, English, etc.)
This is a 12-week course designed to help students reach their own personal fitness goals and encourage healthy activity for life. During this class we will be doing a wide variety of fitness activities, from Pilates to bike riding. This class is not designed for students who are already involved in competitive sports, but rather for those who would like to learn how to make fitness a part of their young adult and adult life.
